Nashville, TN – This week’s Tennessee Titans-Detroit Lions matchup is the 12th all-time meeting between the Titans and Lions. In the 11 previous bouts with the Lions, the Titans hold an 8-3 record.
The Detroit Lions will start the season 2-0, winning their home opener against the Tennessee Titans by a score of 35-21.After a solid showing on offense against Indianapolis, Matthew Stafford continues to build chemistry with his new receivers not named Calvin Johnson. After a solid showing on offense against Indianapolis, Matthew Stafford continues to build chemistry with his new receivers not named Calvin Johnson. They face a far more talented, and balanced, offense in the form of Stafford and the Lions, but a far less imposing defense. Can they learn from their mistakes from last week and exploit the weaknesses of Detroit?Could be a tall order.
Matt Pelc (0-1) – Last week, the Detroit Lions’ defense seemed to have success early in the game when they were being aggressive and pressuring Andrew Luck, but once they backed off the pressure, he started to have success.
Look for the Lions to do what they did best last week. They should be able to limit the damage of a decent Titans’ running game, but the key will be to not let Marcus Mariota get on track, and let the second-year QB beat them.Mariota is no Luck, but he has potential, and the Lions’ defense has the potential to collapse. The Titans offensive line did a decent job of keeping Mariota protected last week, and I expect the focus to remain on playing the underneath and timing routes where Mariota can do so much damage.I also expect Delanie Walker to play a more central role against a weaker defense.
The last time these two teams met, the Titans prevailed 47-41 in overtime in 2012. If Tennessee can find its rhythm on offense this week, that score could be replicated. The Titans will need a better performance from their secondary, but they have a better defense than Indy.If they can get the key stops they need and turn in a stronger offensive showing, the Titans could end up the victors in this one.
